finally found the [exet]er library

the exeter library by louis kahn is surprisingly hard to get into to view.

after a few years and several attempts it finally worked out. i found myself in that neck of the woods during spring break, which meant the public could tour the library and take pictures...since there were no students studying.

i'm torn.  there are very few spaces that give me a sense of awe as i walk into them.  this was one of them.  however i'm not sure if it's because it's actually an awe inspiring space or if it's just because ii studied this building back in architecture school and i finally saw it in person.  either way it was an incredible space to walk through and i'm thankful i took the time and patience to finally see it.

new[year]new[job]

the end of 2022 was a bit more stressed than i like my end of years to be.

the firm i worked at for the last seven years was making some changes and needed to let me go.  [basically, my boss wanted to go down to being a sole practitioner and needed me gone to do that] it was all on good terms but still stressful.

the month of december found me dusting off my resume and portfolio and making calls.  thankfully i was able to get interviews at four great firms of which three produced an offer.  after taking a week to think about it, by the end of the month i had a job lined up and started in january.

hard to say if this will be a good thing or not, but there is something very [aligned] about starting a new job in january. a few shots from around the office...now located on the [east end]

[holy] modernism

whenever i travel, like most architecture nerds, i check and see if there's any cool building around to look at.  finding myself in connecticut this summer i scoured blogs and articles looking for structures to visit.  now the glass house always pops up, but i've been there, done that, got the shirt.  i was looking for something new.  thankfully i found an article of sort of a forgotten modernist church by victor a. lundy. it was the first unitarian church in westport.  an architect and building i had not heard of.

before heading there, i called the church. it's not really a "touring" site but they said i could stroll the grounds and check it out.  walking around the incredible site i was taken aback.  it was a very interesting and inspiring structure. very flw apprentices looking, melding nature and organic forms with modernism.  i was so struck by it, i actually called the office and asked if i could come back on sunday to view the inside, to which they said yes.

i'm so glad this building popped up on my google search. like all well-designed spaces it was incredibly inspiring and added to the overall vacation.  if ever in westport connecticut, please stop by.

[college]friends

not sure if it's true for everyone, but the friends you make in college are some of the best you ever make.

now there could be a lot of reasons for this but in my case i know it's because we all went through architecture school together, more specifically, studio.  all crammed in together, weeks upon weeks of working on projects, pulling all nighters to finish, cramming for tests, being cut off socially from the rest of the student population and then celebrating at the end of a project.  we went through a lot together.  it's no wonder my architecture friends stay in close contact to this day, texting almost daily on one long, continuous, rambling group text, that proves we've achieved lot since college but have matured only slightly.  but always being there for each other to celebrate the accomplishments and there to support each other through the difficulties.

all that being said, my college friend ryan was passing through town, so we took that as the perfect chance to get off the text chain, enjoy some beers in person and celebrate his first kid coming into this world very soon

on[line] lectures

i belong to an organization call architalx whose mission is to bring four speakers to the city of portland every april to talk about architecture and design. however with the pandemic, we had to switch to lectures online. like a good organization always does, we didn't let that stop us from putting on a quality month of lectures. not only was this a great opportunity to hear some incredible architects, landscape architects and designers speak, it also allowed me to break out my new sketchbook come and get a few sketches....all in the comfort of my pajamas.
